Entendemos por génesis de la religación el proceso de preformación de la idea de religación. Zubiri afirma por primera vez la religación en el artículo titulado «En torno al problema de Dios, perteneciente por tanto a la época denominada por los críticos como etapa ontológica.
En nuestro intento de investigar cuál ha sido el proceso a través del cual Zubiri ha ido componiendo su idea de 'religación' en esta etapa ontológica, hemos descubierto lo siguiente: primero, que este concepto 'religación' se convierte punto crucial a través del cual Zubiri se desmarca de sus maestros (Ortega y Heidegger). En segundo lugar, la idea de religación, tal como Zubiri la concibe en esta época, es el punto de inflexión a partir del cual Zubiri va a pergeñar su teoría de la intelección y de la realidad. La clave fundamental para descubrir este proceso de génesis de la religación nos la va a dar la interpretación que hace Zubiri (frente a la que hace Heidegger) del pensamiento del maestro Eckhart, quien, para Zubiri, esboza una ontología desde la dimensión formal de la sustantividad (ousía griega)
