In 1910, Karl Jaspers wrote a seminal essay on morbid jealousy in which he laid the foundation for the psychopathological phenomenology that through his work and the work of Hans Gruhle and Kurt Schneider, among others, would become the hallmark of the Heidelberg school of psychiatry. In General Psychopathology, his most important contribution to the Heidelberg school, Jaspers critiques the scientific aspirations of psychotherapy, arguing that in the realm of the human, the explanation of behavior through the observation of regularity and patterns in it (Erklärende Psychologie) must be supplemented by an understanding of the "meaning-relations" experienced by human beings (Verstehende Psychologie).

Karl Jaspers (Oldenburg, 1883 - Basel, 1969), psychopathologist and philosopher, was one of the most significant voices of the 20th century. In 1909, he graduated in medicine, and in 1914 began his teaching career, first as a professor of psychology and, later, in 1922, as a professor of philosophy at the University of Heidelberg. Between 1930 and 1945, he was removed from his chair by the Nazis. He rejoined the University of Heidelberg after the war ended, and in 1948 moved to Switzerland to teach at the University of Basel. Among his vast output, notable works include Psychology of World Views, Philosophy from the Standpoint of Existence, Man in the Modern Age, On Truth, and Artistic Genius and Madness, Strindberg and Van Gogh (Cliff 2001)
