El título del libro está irónica y correctamente elegido. Temuco no solamente fue fundado como un fuerte militar, sino que sigue siendo una suerte de fortaleza. Es la ciudad menos ciudad de Chile. Rodeada de comunidades mapuche, las desconoce, las niega, hace como que no existieran.
Allí no hay integración social urbana, lo que es fundamental en toda ciudad que se precie de tal; o al menos un cierto carácter común. Solo hay superposición y posiciones hieráticas superpuestas como las estatuas que están en el centro de su Plaza de Armas, representando cada una de las corrientes de población que nunca se reunieron amablemente. Tiene razón Cayuqueo al señalar en el libro que la integración no ha existido y, por el contrario, se mantiene la sociedad sobre la base de la fuerza, la amenaza; esto es, Fuerte Temuco.
Este libro es un conjunto de crónicas que semana a semana Pedro Cayuqueo escribe para diversos medios. Al leerlas de corrido se constituyen en una sola larga crónica que abarca las principales cuestiones interétnicas de los tres últimos años. El lector se informará de lo que ha ocurrido y aprenderá de muchas cosas que incluso personas enteradas han olvidado. Podrá estar de acuerdo o no, pero si quiere conocer lo que ocurre en este central ámbito de nuestra sociedad del siglo XXI, su lectura es indispensable.

(1975) He is a journalist and writer. Founder and director of the newspapers Azkintuwe and Mapuchetimes. He is a regular columnist at The Clinic, La Tercera, and Caras magazine. He is part of the editorial board of the International Indigenous Press Agency (RED-AIPIN) and the advisory council of the National Institute of Human Rights (INDH).

In 2011, he was awarded by the College of Journalists of Chile and in 2013, he received the Ibero-American Journalism Integrity Award, given by the North American Congress on Latin America and New York University. That same year, he was a finalist in the Excellence in Journalism contest (UAH) for his opinion column “Nicolasa, la dignidad rebelde”.
