Synopsis "From Psychiatry to Community: Epistemologies, Rights and Practices for a New Mental Health Paradigm"

This volume examines the ongoing reorientation of mental health care around the world. The book represents a critique of the dominating biomedical paradigm and describes the growing influence of international human rights frameworks. While diagnosis-based and pharmacological approaches continue to shape policy and practice, concerns about coercion, negative long-term outcomes and inequality, have prompted renewed attention to social, relational, and political dimensions of distress.Bringing together twenty-seven contributions from twelve countries across four continents, the book offers a comparative and interdisciplinary analysis of emerging alternatives. The chapters engage with community-based systems of care, dialogical and medication-free approaches, disability rights perspectives, intersectional analyses of inequality, and nature- and arts-based practices. Across diverse contexts, they explore how human rights principles, participation, and social inclusion are being translated into concrete organisational and clinical forms. Reform-oriented initiatives are presented along with more radical critiques, and local adaptations challenge assumptions of universal applicability. Taken together, the contributions provide an empirically grounded and theoretically informed account of contemporary efforts to rethink mental health care beyond biomedical frameworks. Read more
