Surgida de una competencia amistosa entre Lord Byron, Polidori, Shelley y su esposa Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, " Frankenstein o el moderno Prometeo " es una novela que, si bien responde a las características generales del llamado género gótico, traspasa los límites del mero relato de horror e incorpora rasgos innovadores que la sitúan en los orígenes de las narraciones de ciencia ficción. El optimismo científico, la posibilidad de la animación de la materia alentada por los estudios sobre el galvanismo, las leyendas sobre la creación de golems u hombres artificiales y diversos componentes míticos (Fausto, la bella y la bestia, Prometeo) confluyeron en la creación de un personaje cuya dimensión simbólica le ha valido un lugar indisputable en el imaginario contemporáneo.
