Die antibakterielle Wirkung von Chinolon-Antibiotika beruht auf der Bindung an Komplexe, die sich zwischen DNA und DNA-Gyrase bilden. Kurz nach der Bindung bewirken die Chinolone eine molekulare Veränderung des DNA-Gyrase-Enzyms (Hashem et al., 2013). In dieser Hinsicht verursachen Mutationen der Gyrase- oder Topoisomerase-IV-Enzyme Chinolon-Resistenz (Hooper, 1999), was die Ursache für die intermediäre Resistenz von E. coli aus Käse, Enterobacter cloacae aus Eiern und Enterobacter spp. aus Milch gegen Nalidixinsäure sein könnte, da die Mutationen, die für die Verringerung der Affinität des Enzym-DNA-Komplexes zu Chinolonen verantwortlich sind (Willmott und Maxwell, 1993).
