Éloi Leclerc (Landernau, French Brittany, 1921 - Saint Servan, 2016), born Henri Leclerc, joined the Franciscan novitiate in Amiens in 1939. In July 1944, he was arrested by the GESTAPO, accused of anti-Nazi propaganda, along with sixty seminarians, priests, and religious, and deported to the Buchenwald concentration camp. At the beginning of April 1945, due to the proximity of the Allied troops, Leclerc was transferred to the Dachau camp, along with hundreds of prisoners crammed into a freight train, where many of his companions died. He was liberated from Dachau by the US troops on April 29, 1945. After the war, he returned to France and was ordained a priest in July 1948, continuing his studies at the Catholic Institute of Paris for three years. Between 1951 and 1983, he served as a philosophy professor and wrote numerous books, many of them focused on the life and spirituality of Saint Francis of Assisi, such as Wisdom of a Poor Man, a classic translated into several languages.
