The saga of adaptations about the character Doctor Dolittle, whose first eponymous book was published in 1998, consists of five parts (Doctor Dolittle and His Family of Animals or The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle) and is her most acclaimed series. She is also known for her 1991 adaptation of the screenplay for Dead Poets Society, a film by Peter Weir released two years earlier

She studied at Northwestern University in Evanston and works as a journalist for the American magazine Lifestyles.
