Ilse Frapan zeichnet mit ihren Novellen ein Sittengemälde gesellschaftlicher Konventionen des 19. Jahrhunderts. Ein besonderes Augenmerk legt sie dabei auf die Stellung der Frau in der Gesellschaft. Sie zeigt eindrucksvoll, dass durch emanzipatorisches Verhalten festgefahrene Rollenbilder aufgebrochen werden können. Ilse Frapan (1849-1908) war zunächst als Lehrerin tätig, widmete sich jedoch ab ihrem 34. Lebensjahr vollständig dem Schreiben. Unterstützung bei ihren literarischen Ambitionen erhielt sie durch Theodor Storm, Wilhelm Raabe und Paul Heyse. Zeitlebens setzte sie sich für die Rechte der Unterdrückten ein.
