Das Gesamtwerk behandelt deutsche Schriften von ihren Anfängen im 8. Jahrhundert bis zum Beginn der Neuzeit, dieser Teilband die Blütezeit (ca. 1160-1230), eine Zeit unübertroffenen, intensivsten literarischen Schaffens. Er versucht einen Eindruck der Literaturproduktion der Zeit zu vermitteln, indem er als Modelle die Höfe von zwei der wenigen Auftraggeber untersucht, deren literarisches Interesse erkundbar ist. Es geht um die erste deutsche Literatur, die man heute mit nur einem Quentchen historischer Kenntnisse als Literatur genießen kann. Daher wird großes Gewicht auf Literarisches gelegt.
