In Rousseaus pädagogischem Hauptwerk Émile oder über die Erziehung wird die fiktive Erziehung eines Jungen beschrieben. Rousseaus Theorien beeinflussten Immanuel Kant und viele namhafte Pädagogen, so z. B. Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi, Joachim Heinrich Campe, Adolph Diesterweg, Maria Montessori, Ellen Key, Hartmut von Hentig und Dietrich Benner.
