Synopsis "Deuteronomy. The Lord is Always in Control"
Deuteronomy is a nutshell of the other books in this group. The Pentateuch, or the first five Bible books are important in understanding the rest of Scripture.
While other books focus on various segments of Israel from its inception, as a promise, to its wanderings in the desert. This book is a review of the first four.
There are several themes you will find repeatedly. The first is 'God is always in control". He is not only in control of things around Israel, but even leaders and circumstances. God repeatedly states He is responsible for everything. Moses' job was to speak exactly what he was told. He didn't have to argue with the people. He didn't have to think or prepare presentations for the people. Even his argument when called was pitiful.
We read throughout this book, that God has determined He would be Israel's God and be responsible for everything.
The Lord repeatedly says He will never renege on His commitment, even when they reject His plan, love, and discipline.
We discover God has anger but is never driven to make decisions based on it. Everything He asks of the people is for one specific reason. That is to bring glory to himself.
The discipline seems harsh in today's terms, but the fear of the Lord is the beginning of sinlessness. Harsh discipline was also a deterrent to the nations around, as well as the creation of a dialogue from other nations about Israel and its God.
The questions often use personal pronouns. Using personal references will bring the reader into an intimate relationship with what they read.
When readers can personalize what they read and apply it to their experience, scripture becomes shareable, and not just an abstract story.
