English description: This study is concerned with the significance of medieval architectural form, dealing with assertions made possible by erecting an ambulatory with radiating chapels (c.11 - c. 12). It assumes that works of architecture are more determined by the significance their builders assigned them rather than by functional needs. The study presents a method to reconstruct this "message" of a building as intended by the patron and the artists and as perceived by the contemporary spectators. German description: Die Studie untersucht am Beispiel des Chorumgangs mit Kapellenkranz vom 11. bis zum 12. Jahrhundert, welche Bedeutung oder welche Aussagen eine architektonische Form ubermittelten konnte. Der Text postuliert, Formen seien auf Grund ihrer Bedeutung gewahlt worden, und er stellt eine Methode vor, wie die Kunstgeschichte das zeitgenossische Verstandnis von Kunst rekonstruieren kann. Die dem Kunstwerk zugedachte Botschaft war fur die Entstehung von Bauwerken wichtiger als die Funktionen, die sie zu erfullen haben mochten.
