English summary: This comprehensive work deals with the meaning and function of the central topic of the face of YHWH in the Psalms against the background of Ancient Near Eastern textual and iconographic sources. The primary interest of the study is to reconstruct the conception of the face of YHWH as part of the symbolism of the temple of Jerusalem. The main thesis is that the social model of an audience before the ruler provides the source for the 'legibility' of the language of the face of YHWH in the Psalms. German description: Die Rede vom Angesicht JHWHs nimmt in den biblischen Texten eine zentrale Stelle ein. JHWH kann sein Angesicht leuchten lassen, und man begehrt die Schau dieses Angesichts als eine heilvolle Erfahrung der Gottesnahe. Andererseits bedeutet die Verbergung des gottlichen Angesichts das Abgeschnittensein von der gottlichen Zuwendung. Verweisen solche Aussagen in den Psalmen und auch in anderen Bereichen des Alten Testaments auf einen festen Zusammenhang von Vorstellungen? Der primare Hintergrund der Aussagen vom Angesicht JHWHs ist sehr wahrscheinlich im Zusammenhang der Symbolik der 'offiziellen' Religion des vorexilischen und nachexilischen Jerusalemer Kultes zu suchen. Friedhelm Hartenstein fragt nach den Bedeutungen und Funktionen der Aussagen vom Angesicht JHWHs und der damit verbundenen Audienzvorstellung und untersucht, was religionsgeschichtliche Quellen des Alten Orients zu deren Erhellung beitragen.
