Desde su aparición, en 1985, Calvin y Hobbes se convirtió en una de las tiras cómicas preferidas en Estados Unidos. Pero no sólo en dicho país, pues los personajes creados por Bill Watterson han alcanzado gran popularidad en numerosos lugares. ¿Cuál es su secreto? El éxito de esta caricatura radica no sólo en la gracia de los protagonistas y en el humor que derrochan, sino también en el valor del mensaje que transmiten. Dicho mensaje no es obvio ni se manifiesta mediante moralejas, sino a través de sutiles comentarios que lanzan una mirada irónica a la realidad y que destacan valores como la amistad, la felicidad y la imaginación. La tira cuenta las andanzas de un niño y de su tigre. Este último es, a los ojos del mundo, una figura de peluche, pero para Calvin (y los lectores de la serie) se trata de un ser vivo inteligente, simpático y ocurrente. Ambos enfrentan distintas situaciones que van desde problemas familiares hasta viajes en el tiempo (a bordo de una caja de cartón).

Bill Watterson (Washington D.C., July 5, 1958) is the creator of Calvin and Hobbes, one of the most popular and cherished comic strips of the 20th century. Watterson drew the strip from its debut on November 18, 1985, until December 31, 1995. In 1986, Watterson became the youngest person to win the prestigious Reuben Award for "Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year" from the National Cartoonists Society. He won the award again in 1988, and was also nominated for the award in 1992.
