Valerie Thomas is an Australian writer born in Melbourne, recognized for her contribution to children's literature. She worked as a teacher in Australia and Europe, and also as an educational researcher in the area of spelling. Her passion for travel has taken her around much of the world, including places like Antarctica and the Galapagos Islands. This global experience has influenced her writing, adding diversity and richness to her stories.

Her most notable work is the Winnie the Witch series, started in 1987 in collaboration with illustrator Korky Paul. The series has sold over seven million copies and has been translated into more than ten languages. Among the most famous titles are Winnie in Winter (1996), Winnie's New Computer (2003), and Winnie's Amazing Pumpkin (2009). The series was renamed in 2016 as Winnie and Wilbur, reflecting the importance of the cat Wilbur in the stories. Korky Paul, born as Hamish Vigne Christie Paul in Harare, Zimbabwe, in 1951, is a renowned British children's book illustrator. He studied Fine Arts at the Durban School of Art in South Africa and animation at the California Institute of the Arts. After working in advertising in Cape Town, London, and Los Angeles, he settled in Oxford, United Kingdom. His distinctive style, characterized by vibrant watercolors and detailed strokes, has been compared to artists like Ronald Searle and Ralph Steadman.

He is widely known for illustrating the Winnie the Witch series (1987), written by Valerie Thomas, which has sold over 7 million copies and has been translated into more than 10 languages. Other notable works include The Fish Who Could Wish (1991) and The Rascally Cake (1994). In 1988, he received the Red House Children's Book Award for Winnie the Witch. His contribution to children's literature has left a significant mark on readers around the world.
