Cary Bates (born June 6, 1948) is an American screenwriter best known for his extensive work on DC comics, especially during the 1970s and 1980s. He began his professional career in comics at 17, when he sent cover ideas to DC Comics, impressing the editors and securing a job as a writer shortly after. His dynamic style and imagination made him a key figure in the evolution of characters like Superman and The Flash.

During his career, Bates wrote numerous memorable stories for titles such as Action Comics, Superman, The Flash, and Legion of Super-Heroes. He co-created characters like Terra-Man and Vartox. His collaboration with E. Nelson Bridwell was significant, as they both shared a deep understanding of the DC universe and worked together on projects like Super Friends, a series inspired by the animated series of the same name, aimed at a younger audience but always consistent with DC mythology.

In addition to his work in comics, Bates also wrote for television, including episodes of animated series like GI Joe and Captain Atom. His legacy in comics remains as one of the pillars of classic superhero storytelling.
