Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve fue una escritora francesa nacida en París en 1685, considerada una figura clave en la evolución del cuento de hadas literario. Proveniente de una familia acomodada, su vida estuvo marcada por dificultades económicas tras enviudar joven, lo que la llevó a integrarse activamente en los círculos literarios parisinos del siglo XVIII. Allí desarrolló una obra influida por la tradición de autores como Charles Perrault, pero con una mirada más compleja y dirigida a un público adulto.

Es especialmente conocida por haber escrito la primera versión extensa de La Bella y la Bestia en 1740, incluida en La jeune américaine et les contes marins. A diferencia de versiones posteriores, su relato era más largo, oscuro y lleno de subtramas, lo que revela su intención original como novela más que cuento infantil. También publicó obras como La Jardinière de Vincennes, consolidando un estilo narrativo detallado y sofisticado. Su legado ha sido parcialmente eclipsado por adaptaciones posteriores, pero su versión original sigue siendo la base del mito que perdura hasta hoy.
