Tres mil kilómetros por la costa este de Australia y otros tres mil por la costa oeste. Ese es el itinerario seguido por Jorge Carrión para investigar la presencia y el rastro de emigrados españoles en las Antípodas. Desde Sydney hasta Cairns, en la costa oriental, Carrión entrevista a los cortadores de caña de azucar y visita los pueblos y las plantaciones donde vivieron los años más duros que recuerdan. De Darwin a Perth, en la costa occidental, viaja en la avioneta del correo hasta una remota misión y se aloja en un viejo monasterio benedictino para entrevistar a los últimos monjes españoles que quedan allí. Australia es una propuesta nueva y ambiciosa, y el primer estudio de conjunto que se publica sobre la emigración española a Oceanía. En lugar de seguir las formas habituales del ensayo divulgativo o del libro de viajes, su autor apuesta por un híbrido que experimenta con las posibilidades del lenguaje para dar cuenta de la percepción del espacio y del movimiento. El resultado son estas páginas que hablan fundamentalmente de un misterio: por qué los seres humanos sentimos desde siempre el impulso de emigrar.

Jorge Carrión, born in 1976, is a prominent Spanish writer, cultural critic, and academic. Originally from Tarragona, he has spent much of his life in Mataró and Barcelona, and has lived in countries such as Argentina and the United States. He holds a PhD in Humanities from the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) in Barcelona, where he co-directs the Master's in Literary Creation at the UPF Barcelona School of Management. Additionally, he has collaborated with media outlets such as La Vanguardia, The Washington Post, and The New York Times in Spanish.

His work spans various genres, including novels, essays, and chronicles. Among his most notable books are "Librerías" (2013), an essay that explores the history and significance of bookstores around the world, and "Contra Amazon" (2019), where he reflects on the impact of large corporations on book culture and commerce. In the realm of fiction, he has published the tetralogy consisting of "Los muertos" (2010), "Los huérfanos" (2014), "Los turistas" (2015), and "Los difuntos" (2015). His work has been translated into more than ten languages, establishing him as an influential voice in contemporary literature.
