Pablo Neruda fue el seudónimo que consagró a Ricardo Eliecer Neftalí Reyes Basualdo como la voz lírica más abundante y admirada de la literatura hispanoamericana del siglo XX: desde Veinte poemas de amor y una canción desesperada (Edaf), pasando por Residencia en la tierra y Canto general hasta llegar a su autobiografía en prosa Confieso que he vivido. Esta Antología popular, que por primera vez se repone al alcance del gran público, es la única que hizo el poeta sobre su propia obra. Se trata de una selección destinada, en principio, a ser editada para concelebrar de modo multitudinario el premio Nobel y el septuagésimo aniversario de su nacimiento, efemérides que, fatalmente, se vieron truncadas por el golpe de Estado de Pinochet. Una de las escasísimas copias del original, preparado con la ayuda de Homero Arce, la conserva Manuel Márquez de la Plata que ha cuidado esta popular edición como testimonio del gusto personal de Neruda.

Pablo Neruda (Parral, Chile, 1904 - Santiago, Chile, 1973), pseudonym of Ricardo Eliécer Neftalí Reyes Basoalto, was one of the most influential and recognized poets of the 20th century. His extensive work ranges from passionate romanticism to political and social poetry. Among his most celebrated books are Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair, Canto General, and Residence on Earth. Awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1971, his poetry has been translated into numerous languages and remains one of the most prominent voices in Latin American literature.
