Según Edward Gorey (Chicago, 1925-Yarmouth, 2000), su talento como ilustrador provenía de su bisabuela Helen St John Garvey, popular creadora de greeting cards (tarjetasSegún Edward Gorey (Chicago, 1925-Yarmouth, 2000), su talento como ilustrador provenía de su bisabuela Helen St John Garvey, popular creadora de greeting cards (tarjetas de felicitación ilustradas) en el siglo XIX. A los dieciocho años se matriculó en la prestigiosa School of the Art Institute de Chicago, donde estudió tan solo un semestre antes de dedicarse a dibujar de forma profesional. Diez años después se fue a vivir a Nueva York, donde trabajó como ilustrador de cubiertas e interiores para la conocida editorial Doubleday. Durante este periodo Gorey comienza a crear sus propias obras ilustradas, viñetas de línea muy trabajada acompañadas de un breve texto rimado (a la manera de las romanzas de ciegos medievales), lleno de juegos de palabras, que contaban historias surrealistas, macabras y oscuras llenas de un humor siniestro y absurdo que no fue bien comprendido en su momento.IIustrador de culto con gran influencia en cineastas como Tim Burton y Mark Romanek, y referente inevitable del moderno movimiento gótico, Gorey publicó a lo largo de su carrera más de cien obras, buena parte de las cuales han sido reunidas en tres volúmenes anteriores de la colección Avatares: Amphigorey (2002), Amphigorey también (2003) y Amphigorey además (2005). El presente volumen, Amphigorey de nuevo , recopila 24 historias del genial ilustrador, entre las que destacan "La otra estatua", "El cubretetera encantado", "El violento oleaje" o "Las flores acuáticas".

Edward Gorey (1925-2000) was an American author, illustrator, and artist known for his distinctive, dark, and macabre humor style. Throughout his career, Gorey wrote and illustrated over 100 books, many of which have left an indelible mark on literature and visual arts. His work spans a wide range of genres, from children's literature to horror and mystery, always with a unique approach that mixed the gothic and the absurd.

Among his most famous works are The Gashlycrumb Tinies (1963), The Doubtful Guest (1957), and The Unstrung Harp (1953). His illustration style is instantly recognizable by its fine and detailed lines, often in shades of white, black, and gray. Although he did not receive major awards, his influence on art and literature is widely recognized.
