Mary Tourtel (Mary Caldwell Tourtel, 1874–1948) fue una ilustradora y autora británica, figura clave de la literatura infantil del siglo XX. Se formó como artista en una época poco indulgente con las mujeres profesionales y desarrolló una carrera sólida como ilustradora antes de crear, en 1920, al célebre personaje Rupert Bear para el Daily Express. Concebido inicialmente como una alternativa al auge de las tiras estadounidenses, Rupert destacó por su estética cuidada, su tono amable y una narrativa que combinaba fantasía, aventura y costumbrismo británico.

Durante más de una década, Tourtel escribió e ilustró las historias diarias del personaje, estableciendo su universo, ritmo y estilo visual. Su trabajo sentó las bases de una de las series infantiles más longevas del Reino Unido, continuada posteriormente por otros autores.
