Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers
Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers (1854–1918) was a British occultist, translator, and central figure in the late 19th and early 20th century esoteric revival. Born in London, Mathers attended Bedford School and, although his formal academic training was limited, he became one of the most influential figures in modern Western occultism. He co-founded the renowned Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in 1888, alongside William Wynn Westcott and William Robert Woodman.
Mathers specialized in the translation and study of ancient texts on magic, alchemy, and Kabbalah. Translated from French and Latin, his works include The Key of Solomon, The Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage, and The Armadel Grimoire. These works, though controversial, have been fundamental in shaping contemporary esotericism and the practice of ceremonial magic.
Self-proclaimed "Count of Glenstrae" and supposedly a descendant of the Scottish clan MacGregor, he adopted the name "MacGregor" to enhance his mystical image. Mathers lived for many years in Paris, where he continued his esoteric work. His legacy endures, particularly through his impact on figures like Aleister Crowley and the evolution of Western magic.
