This book was considered subversive at the time, being banned in Francoist Spain and burned in Nazi Germany. Leaf also collaborated with illustrator Robert Lawson on books such as "Wee Gillis" (1937) and "Aesop's Fables" (1941). His work has been internationally recognized, and "The Story of Ferdinand" was adapted into an animated short by Disney in 1938.
