J. Balcells
Jacqueline Balcells, born in Valparaíso in 1944, is a distinguished Chilean writer specializing in children's and young adult literature. Her narrative combines elements of fantasy and realism, set in magical settings and, often, related to the sea. She began her literary career in 1982 while residing in France and, after returning to Chile in 1986, continued publishing works both individually and in collaboration with Ana María Güiraldes.

Among her most recognized works is Cuentos secretos de la historia de Chile (1992), co-written with Ana María Güiraldes and published by Editorial Zig-Zag. This book presents eight stories set in various times and places of Chilean history, including titles like "Tea Tea y la bandera de Rapa Nui" and "Meli Nahuel, el pequeño araucano". Other notable works by Balcells include El niño que se fue en un árbol (1986), El país del agua (1991) and Cuentos de los reinos inquietos (1993). Her contribution to children's literature has been internationally recognized, being included in the IBBY Honor List in 1990 for El polizón de la Santa María (1988).
