Allan Slutsky
Allan Slutsky (Philadelphia, USA) is a guitarist, arranger, and writer, also known by the pseudonym "Dr. Licks". A graduate of Berklee College of Music in 1978, he has specialized in the transcription and analysis of guitar and bass solos, significantly contributing to musical education. His approach combines academic rigor with a deep understanding of soul and funk, standing out as an influential figure in the documentation of American popular music.

Among his most notable works is Standing in the Shadows of Motown: The Life and Music of Legendary Bassist James Jamerson (1989), which combines biography and musical transcriptions of bassist James Jamerson, and was awarded the Ralph J. Gleason Music Book Award. He later produced the homonymous documentary Standing in the Shadows of Motown (2002), which broadens the focus to The Funk Brothers, Motown's session musician group, and received two Grammy Awards in 2003. Other notable publications include The Funkmasters: The Great James Brown Rhythm Sections 1960–1973 (1997) and Beyond Basics: Funk Guitar Rhythm Chops (2002), consolidating his reputation as a music historian and educator.
