Clare Mackintosh is a British author born in Bristol, known for her psychological thrillers and crime novels. Before turning to writing, she worked for twelve years in the British police, serving in the Criminal Investigation Department and as a public order commander. In 2011, she left the police force to become a full-time writer. She is the founder of the Chipping Norton Literary Festival and currently lives in North Wales with her husband and three children.

Her first novel, I Let You Go, published in 2014, was a resounding success, becoming the best-selling debut thriller of 2015 and winner of the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year in 2016. Her subsequent books, I See You, Let Me Lie, After the End, Hostage, The Last Party, and A Game of Lies, have also been Sunday Times bestsellers and have been translated into more than 40 languages, with over two million copies sold worldwide.

In 2024, she published her first memoir, I Promise It Won’t Always Hurt Like This, inspired by the loss of her son in 2006. Additionally, she is a sponsor of the Silver Star Society, a charity that supports parents facing high-risk pregnancies at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.
