(New York, 1933-2004) writer, novelist, philosopher, essayist, professor, film director, and American screenwriter. She began her literary career in 1963 and established herself as one of the leading figures in the intellectual movements of the sixties. She is highly esteemed, both for her works and for her denunciation of major contemporary social and political issues. She has received several awards, including the Jerusalem Prize for her body of work in 2001 and in 2003 the Prince of Asturias Award for Literature and the Peace Prize, awarded by German booksellers.
