Wider Willen starkt Karl Barth das Individuum - und wird damit zum Vorreiter dieser massgeblichen Tendenz in der evangelischen Ethik der Nachkriegszeit. Eine Relekture von Barths Ethik anhand der Individualisierungstheorie des Soziologen Ulrich Beck macht dies deutlich. Den einzelnen Handelnden werden in der Nachkriegszeit grossere Entscheidungsspielraume eingeraumt. Zwar bewertet Barth eine zunehmende Individualisierung skeptisch und versucht ihr sogar entgegenzuwirken. Doch indem er den Ereignischarakter des Gottesgebots hervorhebt und das Handeln des Einzelnen unmittelbar an dieses Gebot bindet, starkt er die Position des Individuums: In der Terminologie Becks eine unbeabsichtigte "Nebenfolge".
