Recienvenido has just arrived in Buenos Aires and is completely in awe of the world around him. Through his innocent eyes, the absurdities of political, social, and intellectual life in the city are revealed. Full of humor and keen commentary, these notes are an example of the avant-garde writing that stemmed from the boom of Latin American creativity in the early 20th century. A written portrait of the author by Ramón Gómez de la Serna and an afterword by Jorge Luis Borges shed light on the evolution of Fernández’s work.

Macedonio Fernández (1874–1952) was an Argentine writer, poet, and philosopher, considered a key figure in 20th-century Rioplatense literature. His work, marked by humor, irony, and metaphysical reflection, deeply influenced authors like Jorge Luis Borges, who greatly admired him. Although he published little during his lifetime, Macedonio left numerous writings, including Papeles de Recienvenido and Museo de la novela de la Eterna, where he questions the limits of reality, identity, and narrative. His experimental style and innovative thinking make him a precursor of modern literary thought in Latin America. He was also an eccentric and charismatic character, very present in the intellectual circles of Buenos Aires.
