Un año después de su estreno en la edición belga de la revista
Tintín, la que todavía no era una serie de éxito, Thorgal ralentizó
su producción. Su guionista, Jean Van Hamme, se embarcó durante
muchos meses en diversos proyectos audiovisuales.
André-Paul Duchâteau, narrador ecléctico y también redactor
jefe de Tintin, vio la ocasión de colaborar más estrechamente con
su dibujante polaco, Grzegorz Rosinski. De ahí salió la idea de una
saga de ciencia-ficción protagonizada, en un mundo poscataclísmico,
por un personaje enigmático Hans y por su compañera
Orquídea.
