El cuento en China alcanzó un alto grado de desarrollo durante la dinastía Tang (618-907) cuando se escribieron excelentes historias sobre pintorescos personajes. Estos cuentos, conocidos como Chuang Qi (Historias extrañas), en su tiempo fueron considerados literatura de segunda clase en comparación con los ensayos clásicos de los letrados. Antes de la época Tang, China ya había sido cuna de hermosas y conmovedoras historias y leyendas. A juzgar por las obras existentes, algunas de ellas parecen parte inseparable de las antiguas fábulas -es decir, de las leyendas que servían para explicar alguna filosofía- mientras que otras eran el vehículo usado por budistas y taoístas para propagar sus respectivas religiones. Estos cuentos merecen leerse por su propio valor. No sólo porque son encantadores, sino porque han alcanzado un alto grado de excelencia artística.
