In the early 1960s Italian design legend Bruno Munari published his visual case studies on shapes: Circle, Square, and, a decade later, Triangle. Using examples from ancient Greece and Egypt, as well as works by Buckminster Fuller, Le Corbusier, and Alvar Aalto, Munari invests the three shapes with specific qualities: the circle relates to the divine, the square signifies safety and enclosure, and the triangle provides a key connective form for designers. One of the great designers of the twentieth century, Munari contributed to the fields of painting, sculpture, design, and photography while teaching throughout his seventy-year career. After World War II he began to focus on book design, creating children's books known for their simplicity and playfulness.

Bruno Munari (1907–1998) fue un artista, diseñador y escritor italiano, considerado una de las figuras más innovadoras del arte y el diseño del siglo XX. Nació el 24 de octubre de 1907 en Milán y desde joven mostró interés por el dibujo y la experimentación visual. En la década de 1930 se unió al movimiento futurista italiano, donde comenzó a explorar el dinamismo, el movimiento y la relación entre arte y tecnología.

Munari desarrolló una obra amplia y diversa que abarcó pintura, escultura, diseño gráfico, industrial y editorial. Fue pionero en el uso del arte como herramienta educativa y comunicativa, proponiendo una creatividad accesible para todos. Creó objetos y libros infantiles que fomentaban la imaginación y la percepción sensorial, como Nella notte buia (1956) y Le macchine di Munari (1942). También destacó por su diseño funcional y poético, donde combinaba simplicidad, humor y precisión.

Además de artista, fue un importante teórico del diseño. En su libro El arte como oficio (1966) reflexionó sobre el proceso creativo y la función social del diseñador. Bruno Munari murió en Milán el 30 de septiembre de 1998. Su legado sigue influyendo en el diseño contemporáneo y en la pedagogía artística moderna.
